Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850) was a French novelist and playwright, renowned for La Comédie Humaine, a vast series of interconnected novels depicting 19th-century French society. His works, including Père Goriot and Eugénie Grandet, explored themes of ambition, power, and human nature. A pioneer of literary realism, Balzac influenced writers like Flaubert and Zola.
Between 1825 and 1848, he stayed frequently at the Château of Saché (32km from la Dixmeresse). This château and its surroundings inspired his novel Le Lys dans la vallée.
