Jean Schubnel (1894–1987) was a French naïve painter known for his richly detailed, brightly coloured depictions of rural life and historical scenes. A self-taught artist, he drew inspiration from folk traditions, creating intricate, dreamlike compositions reminiscent of Henri Rousseau’s style. Schubnel’s works often featured bustling villages, grand processions, and medieval castles, reflecting a deep nostalgia for France’s past. His meticulous, almost miniaturist technique and imaginative storytelling earned him recognition in the naïve art movement. Though less famous than Rousseau, Schubnel’s unique vision and charming, decorative style continue to captivate admirers of outsider and folk art.
He lived his whole life in the region – born in Château-la-Vallière in 1894 and died in Langeais in 1987 (16km from la Dixmeresse). He gained notoriety after the Second World War and you will find some reproductions of his work on the walls of this room.
